Solidarité entre générations

SOLIDARITY BETWEEN  GENERATIONS

In the beginning of the XXIst century, under the pressure of the liberal economy’s development, our societies are changing faster than ever (at a faster pace than ever). The rural exodus, the migrations and the wars have displaced populations, causing ruptures (breakups), sources of suffering for many people.

At the same time, the progress of medicine and the conditions of living have increased the age expectancy for all classes of people, including people followed by the medico-social services.

However, services related to dependency related to aging have resulted in costs that the younger generation has more and more difficulty in assuming both financially and morally.

The changing structure of the family (recomposed families, single parents families…) has confused the genealogical boundaries as much for the young as for the older generations.

One also begins to observe the development of age categories that are becoming more and more distinctive: infancy, adolescence, adulthood, third generations, even fourth…, with gaps ever widening to the point of becoming barriers between generations, resulting in misunderstanding, and even open confrontations.

How can we surmount those barriers  to assure the continuity of the transmission and the solidarity between the generations, strengths of our humanity.

Given the situations, we are confronted to crucial questions:

  • how to maintain or restore the intergenerational ties?
  • how to help the seniors, often isolated, who wish to transmit their values and culture?
  • how to awaken the receptivity of the younger generations to be open to receive these cultural values that allow for the continuity of a changing society?
  • how to live together?

Are you asking the same questions?
What is the situation like in your country or in your institution?

Your testimony will enable us to share ideas (brainstorm) (think together) during the study days in October so that we can prepare the next conference on this subject.
